| One summer afternoon while Mom was sewing, I recalled for her an event that I remembered but couldn't place. It was a farm and I remembered sitting on a park bench right outside the kitchen door. I was there with my sister and a man who I know was related but I couldn't remember who he was. I wanted to go up into the hay loft of the barn but the man told me that it was 'dirty' up there. I was indignant, it wasn't dirty, dusty maybe but certainly not 'dirty'. Why do you think they put hay up there anyway? My Mom was speechless. She listened intently as I recalled my feelings of resentment at being told such an excuse about the hay. She asked me more about everything I could remember about that farm. I recalled a lot of detail and when I was done, Mom explained that I was only one year old and had taken my first step on that farm. It was the only time that I had ever visited her parent's farm in So. Dakota. Grampa died shortly after that and Grandma came to live with us until she died when I was in Jr. High. I try not to under estimate what a child can understand. They may not be able to speak like an adult but I remember thinking like one before I could walk. Tyler Woods, from WA, entered 1999-12-15 |
