Kountry Life Memories

Country Childhood
I grew up in northern Pa. My neighbor hood consited of relatives living on small farms that had been owned by the same families for more than one hundred years. I don't think that there could be a better way to live. The roads were all dirt and if a strange car was to happen along the women would all be on the party line and the entire neighborhood would know that there was a stranger about ina matter of minutes. All told there were several thousand acres that us kids could roam at will. There were probably twenty or so of us kids ranging in age from newborn to late teens. There were grandparents ,uncles ,adult cousins, aunts that would snatch you up and give you a butt whippun regardless of who you belonged to if you needed one, and you hoped like mad that they didn't tell your own parents cause you were n for another whuppen if they found out. It is unimaginable in this day and age That a ten year old would be allowed to handle a firearm let alone own one for his own use. It was pretty much the traditional gift for a ten or twelve year old a new .22 rifle. I acan remember many times tellin my mother that we were goin camping and 3 or 4 of us would roll up some blankets grag our .22's and disappear into the woods for a few days. Course we weren't totally unsupervised. One uncle or grandparent or cousin would see us around once a day or so quite often when our woods skill were't quite what we imagined them to be and we raided a garden or henhouse for food. I wish that I could give my children just a taste of what real freedom is but the world has changed so much thatit just can't happen.
