The turblant air that is present in a storm and the temperature differential acts as a light filter and remove all but the yellow/green mid visible wave length color. You know when you see it, there is very unstable atmospheric conditions present which are favorable for a twister to form. My uncle used to say "Yellow-green in the sky take a dive" (meaning get to severe storm cover in the ground)
