The ones I've been to , each item had a sheet of paper attached to it. You wrote your name down and how much your bid was for. Then other people did the same by raising your bid, usually by a predetermined amount,
This went on for a set amount of time, then the highest bid won that item, all bids where visiable at all times, and you could rebid a often as time allowed
Some auctions where only for hours, some for weeks, depending on the organization running them.
