Make-do tables are fun: I've used cable spools, pickup beds, stumps and barrels alot, probly my solidest was a pile of old railroad ties, then when i need to bend steel or something, i use the bug bumper cuz it'll take the beating. I thought of another rat reterrent - water. If you had a "moat" about a foot wide around the feed, i don't think a rat could jump it but the chickens don't mind puddles. And for a rat treat, pour a coke in a pie-tin. If they're like mice, they love the stuff but can't burp so they'll just swell up. :)
