You may want to go with a woven landscape fabric instead of plastic.It stops the weeds but allows moisture to penetrate,I have used plastic in past only to find huge ant colonys beneath it on removal,due to the rain protection and warmth.Also have not tried it but have heard that mulching w/sheep manure AFTER emergence of flowers will burn off and kill any weeds attempting to penetrate it.
