I have had pumpkins grow in the strangest places, and not even plant the seed. The strangest was last summer.I had rented a Cat to clean up some brushy fence lines.Just behind our house at the edge of the yard was a mess of wild plum trees that were,if nothing else, an eye sore. So,I dug them all out and pushed them into a big pile to be burned at a later time.Well,I never did get around to burning them, but after our first killing frost in the fall,I noticed something orange on top of the brush pile.Sure enough, there was a pumpkin vine growing out of the dirt, with eight pumpkins hangeing in the brush.I never did figure out where that seed ever came from.
