Computers are a bit more complex than cars - if my car acts strange, i just think back to the last thing i fixed - most always i bumped something or forgot to plug something back in. With your puter, it could be that OR something that WAS DONE to your machine without your awareness, either by another user or a virus. Has anybody plugged a CD in the slot lately? I recently got some photos put on a CD at walmart, and when the thing was setting up my puter for them, it asked about a Microsoft Update and i stupidly agreed. Some of the new windows were cute but right away, i found i couldn't cut & paste in Frontpage Express until i backed the whole system up to last spring's date. Heck with their trash. Good luck. :)
