when my oldest got outa the marines he goot a job at a filter plant. first day he described the crew as a handful of white guys and a buncha mexicans. well a while later, he got acquainted with one of the gals and found out she (at age 18) was the sole survivor of a family that had left el salvador for a new home in the states. her dad had gotten killed by guerillas, their house was torched and mom fled on foot with the kids. a ways later another bunch got them and they had to witness the dismembering of the mother, and somewhere in mexico her brother fell ill and finally died. she kept walking and finally made it. so to her, minimum wage atr florence filters and a friend to stay with was heaven. when my son told me her story, i asked him if he still thought of them as a buncha mexicans.
