We all live in the country or would like to at some time such as retirement. I am a elementary school Principal in a small town in Calhoun County, MS. Our school is Vardaman Elementary and we have about 410 students in k-4 through 6th grade.
We had no students Monday and Tuesday due to Staff Development that had been planned since the beginning of school. Three sixth graders and one fifth grader were working on a computer looking up a science project. The house was across from the school. One of the boys thought he heard something outside and he got a loaded .22 from the father's bedroom. When he cam back into the house the gun went off striking one of the boys in the temple. He was unplugged off life support at noon today. This was a bright young man that had never been sent to my office for any reason. I told a parent that it is common to see a first grader that had killed an eight point white-tail and boys do not realize the danger that loaded guns pose. I guess I just wanted to say, moms and dads make sure that you do not leave children in the house unattended with loaded guns. I would hate for anyone else to go through the pain that we have endured for the past two days.
