Story sounds kinda fishy to me. Thought he heard something outside and accidentally bumped the gun and it went off when he came in. Just being naturally suspicious I guess. Obviously several rules of firearms safety were broken and a young man paid a horrible price for another's carelessness. Never allow a loaded gun in the house. Ammo and guns stored seperately, Never allow a firearm, loaded or not, to be pointed at the direction of anyone. Always open the action of a gun when you carry it (and you aren't out hunting.) I was at a flea market yrs back and a dealer had some guns for sale, a very foolish person picked up one of the guns and aimed it directly at the back of my head, and within a few inches. When I saw it, out of the corner of my eye, I immediately turned and pushed the barrel up in the air and slugged the person. It was mostly a instant reaction. I started screaming at the him, to never point a gun at me again. It turned out to be a 15 yr old kid and the kid's father started yelling at me. It turned into a real hassle, cops and all. Fortunately for me, several bystanders stayed and told the cops the kid just aimed at the back of my head with his finger on the trigger. Even the dealer said he told the kid not to touch the guns and the kid said "FU" The father wanted me charged with assault and I wanted the kid charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The kid was charged. Cop said I was acting in self defense and told the father to shut up or he'd be charged with harrassment. There was no bolt in the rifle, but I didn't know that when I reacted. I was shaking for days over the incident and still have an occasional nightmare about it. I am certainly not in favor of most gun control proposals and have come to the conclusion, that although thir are some folks who should never have a gun, they don't care about the law and will get them anyway. Law abiding citizens will need the guns to hunt and to protect themselves from those folks, cause the law can't.
