I think the word you want there is eminent, not imminent, which means it's about to happen any moment.
BTW, eminent domain is not necessarily the last word. The town took 10 acres from us for a water supply back in the '70s. They offered dad what he thought was a ridiculous figure of $10K, seeing as how they found a million-gallon-a-day supply of excellent water. Eventually they went to $15K and said that was their final offer. Dad refused. It went to the Eminent Domain Commission who said it was worth $40K. Dad refused that and it went to Superior Court where he was awarded $150K plus interest for all the years that had passed which brought it to almost $180K. Our lawyers were paid well and they were worth it.
You do have to give up your land but you don't have to take what the Eminent Domain Commission gives you if you think it's worth more and can prove it to a jury.
