How do you get your strawberry plants to produce better?

I planted strawberry plants that produce all summer long. Put them in barrels last year using potting soil and watering them with miracle grow.
They produced very poorly . Only have 2 plants per barrel. The fruit that did produce were good eating but the birds got their share too, sometimes b4 I did! I live in the Pacific NorthWet where sunshine is scarce. The slugs are terrible too.

Any strawberry experts out there that could give me a hand in hopefully having a few more of those red beauties produce better? What kinda soil is best and do I need more starter plants, etc.?

Thanks
