(1935-38) One room school name of "White Oak" near Wellsville, Mo., 8 students, one teacher, seems as if one year she would teach grades 1,3,5,and 7. Next year it was 2,4,6,and 8. Never forget an incident.... we were out playing at recess, the teacher had a very bad cold. She came out and rang her hand bell for us to come in. As we were going past her, I said to my buddy that she was really "hoarse". The next thing I knew she had hit me in the head with that bell. She thought I had called her a "horse". Got inside and had set at my desk, then the girl next to me started yelling that I had blood coming down the side of my head. That bell had cut my head open. Sent me home (walk 1 3/4 miles) and the people I was staying with never said a word to her about hitting me. (Back then it was "you must have done something to deserve it") And yes, those outhouses were really cold in the winter time, and full of wasps in the summertime. Toilet paper??? not on scene back then, it was a Sears-Roebuck or Montgomery-Ward catalog!! Aaahh the good old days !!!!!!! LOL
