Just doing a little Googling I found some decent info.

The 3.4 liter GM motor was a pretty dependable motor. Although the exhaust system seems to be rather expensive to replace. A lot of people complained about that. But overall the 3.4 seems to be dependable.

It was replaced by the 3.8 liter motor.

GM used this motor in the Chevy Lumina in the mid to late 90's and is in the 2000's Chevy Impala too. That has to be a good sign that the motor has been able to work in many GM models and has survived a couple of decades.
