I guess a buck sixty ($1.60) on three squares a day for a faimly of 4 was pretty thrifty. Few years back we were going through a rough period and had a "tight" food budget. Like $40-50 a month. We would get bread, milk, butter, sugar, flower, spices, and tea at one of those thrifty stores (Aldi's here). No pop, pre-made food, box meals, or meats. All meat came from the chicken pen or hunting. Rabbit and squirel mostly, but did get a RK deer during that time. It was to late to plant a garden, (fall/winter) however I bartered with a neighbor for a bag of taters, some beans, and carrots. Spent 4 months on that plan. Ate well, learned several creative ways to fix meals. Sadly once the bills got back in line we got lazy again and now spend $100 a month on groceries. No meats though, raise my own now.
