I know why it worked, Danny. Because most people (and a lot of doctors) operate under the premise that salves and "wet" ointments such as Neosporin, etc., help expedite wound healing. I worked for a group of orthopedic surgeons for years, and they advocated a different approach to wound healing. They went for the "dry it out" approach. Betadine (which was already been mentioned here) as well as iodine and merthiolate as you mentioned are all drying agents. When incisions are painted with them they are kept in that "weepy" condition, and tend to dry out and heal faster. Warts thrive in moist wet conditions. Thus, the drying out of them brings their demise. ~smiles~
