It has been over twenty years since I was involved in harvesting peas for a food processor. The pea combine, also used for lima beans, consisted of a huge barrel that had an inner liner of screens. The vines tumbled inside and the screens literally wore away the pods and the peas fell through the screens which were then conveyed into a hopper. And the vines were discharged out the rear. Those viners moved so slow you almost had to drive a stake to see them move-about three acres per day. The viners were run in gangs in order to get a load of peas off to the processor before they spoiled. (The peas in the viner hopper contained some pods and juice that could sour rather quickly on a hot day.)I suspect the equipment today has been much improved. However, I can't imagine a small mechanical sheller that would be practical for the home gardener.
