Only two things wurse than hittin a deer.
I had reenlisted in 1959 and was transferred from Ft Sam Houstan (thank God) to Ft Huachuca Ariz. In those days it wasn't how far to the next town, rather how many brewskis would it take ta git there. Drivin my 1958 Chev Impala Sport Coupe, wit a power train out of my buddies 58 Corvette that he wrecked, and I salvaged. Boomin along almost midnite, and got past El Paso before I realized I was almost out of Pearl. If I hurry I kin get ta Las Cruces before the liquor stopres close, so jump on it. I did. Wrong move Sarge. Bout 10 miles east of Las Cruces a cow, full growed, wandered up outa the borrow pit. I put the binders on and the front bumper hit the pavement, the car hit the cow, the hood went down, the fender wells cut the front brake lines, the car hit a bridge rail, (concrete), and the transmission came up thru the floor where we cut the hole ta put the shift lever thru, the engine was up beside me in the front seat. The cow never even touched the car after impact but flew clear over the back bumper.
Moral of the story "JUST REMEMBER< IN NEW MEXICO THERE IS NO STOCK LAW, that sez your cows gotta stay off the highways. To make matters wurse, they got the right of way.
