Signs of winter

In our area we have old sayings that predict how bad winter is going to be, such as the color of wooly worms--if they are brown in fall, light winter, if they are black, bad winter. We also have the persimmon seed. If you cut open a seed, you will see either a fork shape (bad winter) or a spoon shape (light winter)--ehrr, or is it the other way around? Anyway, I know there are other predictions, can anyone remember more of these? Thanks.
