I have 17 Hens and 2 Roosters. The bigger rooster crows no matter what time of day it is. But at night (dark) he's quiet. He starts in the morning when he can SEE me through the kitchen window. He has no schedule to crowing. I haven't found any rhyme or reason to his crowing. But no, the hens don't make him quieter. It just gives him something to crow for!
