Previous owners installed a fancy water softening and filtering system. After using it for about a year or so, I disconnected the softener because we didn't like it at all.

I do still filter the house water through a 20 micron filter (looks like a sock) just to keep the sand and sediment out of the pipes...with the drought the last 2 years, there's been more sediment coming in with the water. But it doesn't affect the taste or hardness at all. The water going out to the barn avoids the filter altogether, and it is the best for drinking!
