As long as the tree wasn't ringed (lost bark all the way around) it should be fine. A close friend's over 100 yr. old Black Walnut tree in Oregon was hit by lightning 3 or 4 years ago and is doing fine with a crack (seperated about 6 inches) in the bark from about 50 feet up all the way to the ground...they should have sold it when they had the chance...might still be able would take four grown men to stretch their arms around it....they got offered $250,000 for it over 20 years ago(from a gun stock company).
