The explanation is that the Amish Bishops don't want the farmers to use tractors because then they could farm too many acres. This would allow them to become too "worldly" in their eyes.

Sounds convoluted, and it is, but that is how they see it. Don't expect an Amishman to see "logic" in the same way you do.

If you are not used to dealing with them, don't get involved. There is no greater sport to an Amishman than getting one over on an "English" (that means you)

Anybody who thinks the Amish are poor or disadvantaged has already been fooled.
