Salt Domes

Here is an illustration to show how these domes are formed and the different shapes. A thick bed of salt is laid down over millions of years and then overlaid with sediment. As time goes by, salt becomes plastic-like under temperature and heat, and then looks for cracks in the overlying rock. it can form domes, or even come out at the surface. The Avery Island salt dome, where Tabasco is made, is only 15 feet below the surface.
