My maternal grandmother had ten children, nine of whom lived past infancy. She raised them alone, and migrated across the country from Tennessee to Oregon with all of them in tow, because my grandpa would visit long enough to inspire another child, and then take off to find work elsewhere.

He seldom found work, so she basically fed and clothed them from her wages as a migrant farmworker. However, she was an amazing, strong, wonderful, ethical human being, and you just don't see very many of those kind of women around anymore.

These days I think that having that many kids is an act of extreme faith - that you will always be around to provide for them; that you will always be well enough to provide for them; and that you raised the first two or three well enough that they can raise the rest right, since you certainly will NOT have the time to see to the upbringing of that many kids all at once.

My .02, from the perspective that I know my mother basically raised her two youngest brothers, and she in turn was raised by her eldest sister, while her mama was out working to keep them all fed...
