Last year I used grass clippings. Mowed the yard and let it sit until dry, then went over with the bagger and spread it in the garden. It worked very well, and worked into the soil nicely this spring.

I want to try the "lasagna" gardening in the bigger plot by the barn. I've tilled it up this year and added 5+ year old cow manure. I've got some old straw and hay I'll use for mulch, and then next year add another layer of manure and keep building it up. It works sort of like the "no till" that is used around here, just dig a hole down into the mess and put in seeds.

When you say "pine straw" are you talking about gathering up fallen needles under the pine trees? I thought they would be too acidic for the garden. . . might depend on the area I suppose.

This year my yard is covered with pine cones - the trees produced a big aboundance of them, and they are falling off. First time we've had them like that since we bought the place five years ago. And all the pines in the yard did this (different varieties too) so I think it may have been weather conditions more than anything.
