Why not steam?

With all the talk about alternative energy, why not go back to steam? It's my understanding that it was phased out becuase diesels were so much cheaper to run. Wonder if we'll ever see a return to steam power? I wish Stanley Steamer would go back into business and make a crewcab pickup.
