I enjoyed your post about threshing grain. Last fall, some guys from our local Agriculture Museum decided we should demonstrate the threshing process. I owned a binder, and the Museum owned a thresher, so we went to work. We cut and bound about two farm truckloads of bound grain, stooked it and let it dry. We did this about a week before our demonstration. Earlier that spring, one of the guys planted about two acres of oats behind our local high school.
On the day of our demonstration, we set up the thresher connected to a Farmall H. Then we started feeding the machine and telling the folks who gathered what was going on. It was fun to watch because a lot of the young folks jumped right into the spirit of things and took turns feeding grain to the machine.
We would take breaks and demonstrate the binder. Other young people wanted to ride the binder, so with a short lesson on which lever did what, off we went. Probably OSHA would have had a poopy fit, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. After that demonstration day, I decided to give the binder to the Museum. The main reason for that decision was watching people having so much fun doing work.
Keeping that old binder running was a life lesson in shadetree mechanics.
Regards,
Chas
