This was recently discussed over on the poultry forum on homesteadingtoday.com. I've resorted to fencing off part of my yard, and I'll limit my flowers to that area.

I like having my chickens free range, but after I put in the flower bed a few years ago, and they dug up several plants while bathing, they got confined. Now with the high price of feed, I want to leave them free range (I have a smaller flock now too). I kept chasing them away (these are different hens than the ones I had problems with before) and they kept going back. Dug up a few perennials, and I decide enough was enough. I now have a fence. Eventually I'll put a white picket fence up, with mesh wire behind. I do not use chicken wire, as I'm trying to keep the chickens out, and not other critters away from the chickens. What I've used is 3' high and sturdier than chicken wire. Cats are not happy, they can't fit through either LOL!

Cathy
