We house our chickens in the general area that we want them to roam. We only give them food or water in that area, as well. Rarely do our chickens stray more than 75 feet from the place where their food, water and shelter are provided for them. We also wait until the afternoon to allow them to "free range". This only gives them about five to six hours to wonder. If we notice a drop in egg production we will keep them in their fenced yard for several days, as well, to ensure that the eggs are not being laid where we can't find them. I know that some people feed their chickens directly outside their front door, and wonder why all the chicken manure seems to be on their doorstep. When chickens wonder through the woods, and yard, they are not observing the lovely sights. They are searching for more food, or water. If a chicken walks out of it's pen, and sees a mountain of food and water, the chicken is not going to travel far.
