Then one day my daughter had a neighbor friend spend the night. I didn't know it, but my daughter had a loose tooth and she worked it out the night before (she hated having them loose, and would get them out as soon as she could).

I got up early and was near the bedroom door and I heard this conversation.

Friend - did the tooth fairy leave you anything?
Daughter - no, my tooth is still here.
Friend - Maybe your cat scared the tooth fairy away.

So I got a dollar out of my purse and went back up stairs and knocked on the door.

I said "Look Honey, I found a dollar outside your door this morning".

Her friend got a big smile - "I bet it was the cat!" she exclaimed.

Later my daughter came to me and told me she knew it was from me, and that there wasn't any "tooth fairy".

We've never done the "mystery creature/person" thing with our kids, but always explained to them that many people did and there was nothing wrong with it, and they should not make their friends feel bad by insisting those beings didn't exist, if their friends believed they did.
