It may be a good thing. Instead of burning a gallon to run last minute errands for a loaf of bread. My grandparents didn't live very far from stores etc. (When I visted, I would walk) But they charted everything out to try to use the car just one or at most two days a week. And gas was only 60 cents a gal then. They kept a note pad by the kitchen door and added things on a list as they needed and when there was a doctor appointment, or club meeting, everything was combined to the extent possible. Mrs and I have started doing that. While the price has near doubled, we are actually using less dollars for gas than a year ago.

Scientists have known for 70 years that we have a limited supply of oil and a huge population. We can't keep driving 10 mile per gal trucks to office jobs in the next county. The price of everything that is transported long distances will increase substantially.

Perhaps the little local businesses may pick up again. Where they couldn't compete with the huge regional businesses, now the cost of transporting the goods may equalize things so the little local guy can stay competitive.
