I'm not sure why this is happening this year, but we are getting overrun with unwanted wildlife.

A few weeks ago, my husband got the badger that was making a mess in the hay field. Last night he went to scout out another hole in the pasture, and discoved a den of 4 fox kits. Then this morning he was scouting out another hole, and out popped 3 fox kits.

We also found another possum in the barn yesterday afternoon.

We've been trying to encourage pheasants on our property (which is working) but that also encourages cottontails, and both encourage the fox and badgers. I think the coyotes must be on a decline for the smaller preditors do be doing so well.

Noramlly we leave the fox alone, unless they are after the chickens, but 7 youngsters growing up in the back yard is a bit much to leave, and hope they don't decide free range chicken are easier to get than rabbits and pheasants. We do lock our chickens up securily at night, but that is a lot of mouths to feed!

In case someone is wondering, it is legal for a landowner in SD to hunt certain small game year round, when on thier own property.

Cathy
