Very smart, Paula. It's always a good thing to get back to basics. You asked where is better to live if it all comes down... I've been poor in the city and in the country, and believe me, it's much easier to make ends meet when you're poor in the country. We are gatherers. Huckelberries grow in our area, and we pick as many as we can each year and freeze them. (they sell for a HIGH price!!!-not that we ever sell them though.) Also gather 'ditch apples' each year. We've found some really excellent wild apples, and I love that .0 per pound price! :) And.... WALNUTS grow all over town! There are 3 kinds, but I mainly prefer the English ones. Believe it or not, most folks who have these trees DO NOT USE THEM!!!??? I'm not too proud to knock on a door and ask if I can pick some up, and (always) have they said, 'take all you want!' I end up with 2 gallon zip locks full of cracked walnuts in my freezer each year. Have you priced walnuts in the store lately?... Barter is a wonderful way to go. I have traded my farm fresh eggs for someone else's nice big plums. Both partys come out happy. Here's something Bob and I have been doing. We decided to see if we could make from scratch, anything we could buy... So far we've made, bread, crackers,(they were GOOD!)tortillas, granola, salsa, jam, and have even made (snow ice-cream) We grow a big garden and put up lots of food each year. I do use a pressure canner. It's not hard to do. It's simply following dirrections, but if someone is unsure, find a friend to show you. There's nothing like seeing it done first hand. We REALLY plan our trips. We mostly just drive to work and church, doing our grocery shopping on our way to work. So there are a few ideas. Hope they are helpful. :)
