Larry, have you tried setting your email software to check for email every 5 minutes? That should qualify as activity on your connection.

I use an email filter, www.mailwasher.net, and have it set to check email every 5 min, so no problems with inactivity.

As for losing your connection, computers are far more sensitive to noise on the phone line than are our ears. If there's noise on your phone line, you will get a computer disconnect fairly often. We have far more problems during spring thaw.
