Susan, Usually the combs and wattles will develope sooner and larger on Roosters, the tail feathers and large wing feathers will coarsen up sooner on Roosters.
You do NOT need to keep them separate to get the hens to lay eggs, they will begin to lay eggs anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks at this time of year.
In general you will see the roosters begin to develope physically, before the hens do.
