Any fireplace experts?

I have a stone/masory fireplace and chimney. Previous owners installed a gas log and ran a liner up through the chimney. With the price of energy and the fact that I have literally TONS of firewood all around me, I would like to convert to a wood burning fireplace insert. The problem is, no one in my area wants to deal with this...they say their insurance rates will sky rocket if they start installing these. Are they that dangerous? Since I already have the masonry chimney, would I be able to run a large single wall pipe up and out the top of the chimney and be safe?
