another battery question

Golf cart battteries, 6 volt, 6 of them wired to deliver 36 volts. When fully charged how much voltage should measure across the posts of an individual battery? I charged them until the charger auto shut off, but the indivudual batteries measure 8 to 10 volts across the posts. Doesn't make sense to me.
