i tried them directional caps and with a wood fire they get stuck up with creosote and quit working and can make it worse because they will stick in one direction and act as a "scoop" for the wind to come down :( regular cap will help, are we talking pipe or brick chimney? if pipe sometimes a 2' piece might do the trick, if its brick they make a big metal cap that has 2 holes in it to add pipe to to raise it up... just my 2 cents
