water sediment filter

I got to have one. Question is. does it really make a difference if it is down below. next to the input to the bladder tank or in a main floor location? 20 ft or so away? I already know there is a cost factor involved. Also, had a pipe break this week and got silt in all my lines. Is this something that will just have to work itself out after a filter is installed?
