if the wife and kids (if they have any) are without a vehicle if he drives the new car wouldn't be good in a lot of ways.Just tell him get car fixed or replaced asap because ya dont mind helping out in a fix but you prefer to ride alone and that is the truth anyway.If he is a good guy he should understand.Truth is the way to go about it.If he truly needs help then help if he dont make him stand on his own.
