If in the north maybe a problem with mice eating the roots. We had lots of damage from mice this year. Maybe too wet and they rotted.
Did you fertilize when you planted? Maybe burned the roots if you did. Maybe the plant wasn't grafted all that well when you got it and didn't notice, if it was grafted.
Anything at all sound like a could be?
