That's true everywhere.
First cutting of hay is normally stalky because of quick spring growth...lots of bulk, but little nutrient value and not as palatable--tough to chew I guess. Second and later cuttings are normally leafier, less stalk, and much more palatable to animals.
When we feed, I alternate between 1st and later cuttings through the winter so they get a balanced diet.
