Rickstir, here in Texas they have us take a course on handgun safety before issuing a license, and it includes a marksmanship test. I've heard advice to not make a perfect score, lest you get labeled a sharpshooter and it might come back to bite you in the butt later on. "Honestly, officer, I was just trying to wound that burgler in the arm/leg/whatever, not kill him, but he had me so scared and my aim was bad."

There is a magazine put out by the NRA with a section called The Armed Citizen, that is full of incidents where people save themselves and others by having a gun. Hey, I am with you all the way on this one! And legal or not, if anybody thinks I'm going to drive to Birmingham to visit my relatives and not be armed, they are crazy. :)
