We bought her from my parents, that old brindled, cross-breed cow:
Though it's been over thirty years, I almost see her now,
Bellowing to wake me, if I overslept that day,
Or breaking in the barn, and making havok of our hay.

I had never milked when we brought Suzie to our land,
I was slow and awkward, but that gentle cow would stand...
She'd never try to kick me, if I scratched her teats, or pinched:
At first it took me half an hour, but Suzie never flinched.

With a rope around her horns, we'd lead her anywhere;
A child could sit upon her back, and Suzie didn't care.
We had milk in excess; I made butter and ice cream,
While clabber grew the fattest, slickest pigs you've ever seen!

I've had many milk cows, but I've never seen another
That had such personality, or made a better mother.
If there is a heaven where old milk cows go to rest,
That's where Suzie has to be, for Suzie was the best!
