I donít think they belong on the public roads and in my area it is not just the kids.

These things are fun and very handy as utility vehicles and they are only as dangerous as the operator to a point.

My opinion is young kids should not be allowed to operate alone until they can prove control and respect for the machine and never on a public road. I donít know how you would ever know when they are ready to ride alone though as most kids will act one way when parents are looking and act completely different when they are out of eye and ear shot.

I almost hit a young kid on one a year ago. I was driving home after dark and he was riding in the middle of my lane coming straight at me. No lights on or anything. At first I thought it was a dog but then at the last second decided it was too big and whipped into the on coming lane to avoid him. I shutter to think what would have happen if the other lane would have had an on coming car in and it was not available to use in a hurry. It amazes me how parents will let kids ride after dark and with no lights or even let them ride on the road with the cars and trucks to begin with.

Most people will operate these machines in an erratic manner that people in cars are not anticipating. I have ridden a few of these and found myself doing the same. After all that is half of the fun. Seeing what you can get the thing to do.

Like almost any tool or piece of equipment they can do damage if not used within the limits of the machine or the operator.
