Hello Jerry,
It blew my mind the first time I saw the place. He had a town built to support all the craftsmen he brought over from europe to build his house. Man.
You hit the nail on the head about tourist towns. I drove through there in 1974 on a motorcycle trip. Took the BlueRidge Mountain Parkway from the south end to the north end. Did it in mid October and I remember it like it happened yesterday. I remember how weird Cherokee N.C. was to me after spending a week in the Great Smokey Mountains too. I got snowed on while doing a repair at Mount Mitchell. Nearly hit a Winniebago head-on just outside of the park when I headed for Virginia. He was coming down a mountain too fast and drifted into my lane. I rode the berm and nearly messed my pants while doing it. Remember that well too...
Asheville is a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing it, and bringing me to recall my youth!
Regards- Mike D.
