Cindi, you got me to thinking on this question and I realized that all my favorite scary movies (movies that really scared the stew out of me) are pretty old ones. I don't think it's because I was so much younger when I saw them, I think it's because movie makers had to rely on psycological means to scare the audience back before they had so many special effects at their disposal. Here is my list:
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - starring Kim Darby, made for TV. This one is far and away the scariest one I've seen and I can't figure out why it's not shown as a rerun.
The Birds - first saw this at a downtown movie theater with my best friend. When we walked outside after the movie, we were both scared to death of the pigeons on the sidewalk!
The Haunting - The original movie was so much scarier than the new remake, in my opinion.
Alien - Still the scariest monster I've ever seen on a film.
Poltergeist - Made me want to double check land history before buying a new house, for sure!
The Black Hope Horror - starring Patty Duke. This one was on TV back in the early 90's and is supposed to be a true story of a house in a subdivision near us. The old story of building a subdivision over an old burial ground again. What got me about it is my ex-in-laws lived in this same subdivision back when this is supposed to have happened. Ex-mother-in-law used to be afraid to stay home by herself and I thought she was neurotic, but now I wonder....
