I think a pump like that will suck the water out of the hole too fast. It doesn't sound like that setup will let the hole recover fast enough. It is overkill for sure - but what you have on hand. A shallow well jet pump would be the ticket there - just run the pipe in the pond and pump away. You can get those jet pumps pretty cheap. I would look into this route.
